Care, Respect and Participation

Care, Respect and Participation

This method is built on an Action-Research. The research was meant to improve my ability to teach democratic values to children with implicit knowledge of those values by finding the best methodologies. The study was conducted with 5-6-year-old children, nine teachers and the investigator and lasted nine weeks. Challenges: Children don´t understand most of the values needed to explain their Rights, so I must return to vocabulary and modelling methods. Children don´t know how to relate their feelings to others. The results showed that I improved my teaching of values by • Using democratic solutions • Modelling values • Using humour • Encouraging children to practice those values. Practical points for the teacher The power relationship must be regulated at school so children can control their activities. Their rights will be discussed so they know what they can do and what is expected of them. Values language must be encouraged and scaffolded within a context that children can understand and to which they relate easily to gain a better understanding of their emotions and the emotions of others. Methodologies • Short literature be used to lead them into philosophical reflections, • Free play, • Drawings that enable them to manipulate value language Findings When children feel respected, they are likely to respond similarly. By giving the children the right to participate, they know their capacity and develop self-agency to convey their ideas democratically. From the children’s perspective, a teacher who respects is kind, does not yell, and plays nicely. Results The Children´s Parlament Teaching of The Convention of Children´s Rights.

1. Children's Congress President: Markus The Red Secretary: Peter The Yellow Secretary: Ruri Teachers: Guðrún B. and Patty Half of the oldest group met. The meeting began by explaining to the children the purpose of the meeting: to talk about activities that take place at school. There can be outdoor games, during social time, during mealtimes or during sports when the children are in the Fífa. The main roles of the meeting were introduced: The president is the child who leads the meeting, the one who gives the floor by pointing to a person and saying their name. The president also chooses the topic to be discussed. The yellow secretary is the child who counts the votes. Different methods can be used for this, by singing, counting with numbers or other. The red secretary is the child who keeps discipline and order in the meeting. He says stop, maintaining a polite and respectful posture as he asks for silence. In the end, the children chose the first president, the yellow secretary and the red secretary. The meeting ended and the children went out to play. The president and the secretaries each got a hat according to the position they had been given: the president got the green one, the yellow secretary got the yellow and the red secretary the red hat. Comment: It would be better to hold the meetings in Háholt. The children could perhaps sit there so that they had more control over themselves.

The teachers, together with the principal, decided to do a short survey about the children's experience of the measures that have been taken due to COVID-19. The purpose is to find out: How aware the children are about the situation in society How they understand the changes regarding democratic values in the light of the actions that have been implemented in the school. Do they know: · Why can't they do all the things they want? · Why are they only allowed to play with certain children and not others. · Why they can't go around the school as they want. Questions for the children : How do you feel about group A/B? What is different than usual? What to do/not to do? Can you decide what you play? What do we do to not be sick? share the food/ wash your hands/ stay in the small group Are you afraid of something? What do you do at home when you are not in kindergarten? How do you feel when you are in kindergarten?

A children's assembly was established and it elected Anna as president, Róbert as red secretary and Holfriður as yellow secretary. The whole group gathered to celebrate that the principal was visiting us. Kristín Laufey introduced herself and conducted the voting on who would be the president and secretaries. For the reasons of many who attended, it was used " Úllen, dúllen dof" . At the beginning of the meeting, Kristín got the floor and she explained to us how the letter was presented to the management and that she had also talked to the cook and together they agreed to distribute the food that was provided by the children's assembly during the theme week. It turned out that Pattý forgot to write a cake in a proposal to management. Kristín explained that young children cannot eat food with a lot of sugar, but that the school can give cakes in small quantities. Regarding decorations, Kristín Laufey will help the children make dinosaurs to decorate the school. To do this, she plans to write a letter to the parents and request materials for recycling. It was also voted to ask parents for a picture of them playing with their children on November 20, which is Children's Rights Day. This picture will be used as a decoration in the nursery. Kristin Laufey will visit us again to read us a letter. Comments: Although the group was large, it showed good behavior and, furthermore, that the children are learning to be a close-knit group and willing to cooperate.
